Recently two members of our Washington Staff – Youngmin Chang and Amélie Cardon – visited several of the poorest and most dangerous parts of Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Their purpose was to see our De-Worming Haiti Campaign in action.
We have brought 500,000 albendazole pills to Haiti for this Campaign.
The most moving stop in a two week visit came at La Terre Promise school, headed by Elderv Morland. When he introduced Youngmin and Amélie to the students he told them that albendazole would kill the worms in their bellies and that he himself took the pill because worms are a problem for everyone in the country.
The “Promised Land” school has 500 students in 1st through 12th grades. As our team filmed the distribution of albendazole, most kids took the pill immediately. A few had already taken the pill at other locations in our Campaign.
Director Morland described other needs at his school:
We need privies for the children most of all. We need tables…they eat in class. Here in Cité Soleil they need everything…they need somewhere to sleep and food to eat. In Haiti, everybody has worms. We are so happy to have albendazole.
Youngmin Chang and Amélie Cardon continue to be deeply attached to La Terre Promise school and seek ways to help those 500 students. It’s now “our school.”
