Water Tank Installation

The Problem: No Available Water Source

Port-au-Prince is a city of 2.5 million people in the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere and has no central water system. Residents must choose between making expensive water purchases and getting untreated water from local wells, springs, and piping systems. Their rural counterparts are often not even provided these choices. Access to safe water simply doesn’t exist.

Community water tanks have become the only viable option. A catastrophic 7.0 earthquake destroyed or damaged many of the existing water tanks around Haiti in 2010. Hundreds of thousands of Haitians are stranded in internally displaced persons (IDP) camps that lack access to clean water. Many schools, orphanages, clinics, hospitals, and neighborhoods never had them in the first place.

Our Solution: Providing Water Tanks

Our water tank installation program is working to restore or replace damaged tanks throughout Port-au-Prince, as well as providing them to communities in need. Our tanks range in size from 150-gallon tanks (perfectly suited for our Clean Water in Schools project) to 2,000-gallon tanks that can serve large neighborhoods or small cities.

Each tank comes with the installation of one of our tablet chlorinators. And we train local water board members or organization officials at each location to monitor chlorine levels in their tanks, add chlorine tablets month after month, and make minor repairs to their system.

Untreated water creates a breeding ground for cholera, typhoid, and hepatitis and causes debilitating chronic diarrhea. Within days of each water tank installation, the number of local diarrhea cases declines dramatically. Over time, waterborne disease outbreaks decrease or disappear altogether.
